IN this time of job insecurity, the question may have occurred to you: Should you consider part-time teaching as a way to improve your finances and expand your career opportunities?

Becoming a teacher can be rigorous and time-consuming, but at the college level, part-time teaching is a realistic option for some professionals. Postsecondary schools are often willing to be flexible about academic credentials in return for real-world expertise.

The need for part-time professors, known as adjuncts, is high right now. Education is one of the few areas of the economy that has been expanding, partly because so many of the unemployed are returning to school.

You may not want to pursue teaching part time, however, if your motivation is mainly financial. The pay for adjunct professors is usually low, and the work can be challenging. Still, the nonmonetary rewards that come with teaching can be substantial.

Often, people need a minimum of a master’s degree to work as adjunct professors, whether at two- or four-year colleges. But with the equivalent skills and expertise, even someone with only a bachelor’s degree might be hired, said Claire Van Ummersen, vice president for the Center for Effective Leadership at the American Council on Education.

At Miami Dade College, which offers both two- and four-year degrees, adjunct professors teach subjects including speech, English, math, architecture, computer science, film, digital production, business and nursing, said Pamela Menke, associate provost of academic affairs.

Adjuncts are in demand both because enrollment is surging and because budget constraints have made it necessary to supplement full-time faculty, she said.

In some fields that operate under the apprentice and craftsman model, the school will consider hiring teachers with only bachelor’s degrees. Dr. Menke cited construction, automotive management and culinary arts as examples.

A typical three-credit class lasting 13 or 14 weeks, taught once a week, might pay $2,100, she said. That doesn’t include grading, course preparation and office hours, which can add 10 hours a week or so, she said.

Previous teaching experience is a big plus, of course, but not always required. To find out about openings, check publications like The Chronicle of Higher Education or college Web sites. The Web site Adjunctnation.com also lists openings. You can also check directly with the head of a particular department.

When applying to be an adjunct, emphasize your education, teaching experience and the expertise that you can offer to students, Dr. Ummersen said.

To those with little teaching experience, the idea of creating an entire course might seem daunting. Fortunately, many schools offer orientation sessions and run programs that help with planning coursework. And the school may already have full course materials available.

An adjunct may be called in at the last minute to fill an unexpected vacancy, limiting preparation time, said Richard E. Lyons, senior consultant for Faculty Development Associates, which helps colleges train teachers.

Being a part-time professor “is hard work if you’re going to do it right” and requires lots of emotional energy, Dr. Lyons said. Professors sometimes say they feel frustrated because their students do not seem as bright or as motivated as they expected, he said.

And then there is the pay, which varies widely. Dr. Lyons has known pay to be as low as $1,500 for a three-credit course and to go as high as $10,000 to $12,000 for a course at the graduate level. But for most, the money will not match the effort expended.

Still, part-time teaching can broaden one’s résumé and contacts, Dr. Lyons said. In professions like the law, he added, it can be an excellent way to find new clients.

And many adjunct professors discover that they simply love teaching. Dr. Menke of Miami Dade College said many adjuncts “get very excited about teaching, and they love interacting with students.”

For John Dello Russo, who owns two vision care centers, being an adjunct professor is a way to do something for his alma mater, the New York City College of Technology, and for the broader community.

Mr. Dello Russo has taught classes including marketing, business math and entrepreneurship for the last 10 years.
